Thai Pestalozzi Foundation

The Foundation

The Foundation for Further Education was formed by a group of people who are interested in providing additional opportunity in education for the children who are keen to study, have good conduct, but lack financial support. This group of people consisted of the Pestalozzi Children's Village Trust in the U.K., former Thai students who were chosen to study in the U.K., under scholarship and guardianship of the Pestalozzi Children's Village Trust, and others who share the same ideas and principles. These people foresaw that if their ideas and principles could be put into practice, then society would benefit to a large extent. So, they proceeded to set up a foundation, named The Foundation for Further Education, which was formally registered on 18 January, 1990

Objectives of The Foundation

Over 30 years of relationship with the Pestalozzi Children's Village Trust

As the Pestalozzi Childen's Village Trust and its ex-studens have been referred to, under the heading "The Foundation", as a founder, it is therefore appropriate to be introduced here,

After the Second World, a Swiss educationist, Mr.Walter Corti, set up an international village at Trogen, Switzerland. This first-ever international village of children, named "Pestalozzi Children's Village", brought 120 war orphans, mostily from France, ltaly, Germany and the U.K., for rehabilitation and education.

The Village was named after Mr. Johann Heinrich Pestalozzi, a Swiss humanitarian and educationalist, who at the turn of the eighteenth century, provided help for child victims of the Napoleonic Wars.

Inspired by the success of the Swiss example, in 1958 the second Pestalozzi Children's Village was established in Sedlescombe, East Sussex, England, about 100 kilometres south of London. The first group of childern to benefit from this Village comprised 40 child victims of war-torn Europe. After 5 years of operation, the Village extended its aid to children in other parts of the world, beyond Europe. The new policy was put to test when 22 Tibetans, living in settlements in the north of India, joined the remaining Europeans at the Village.

By 1966, the Village extended its scope of aid to cover poor children from developing countries. Through this policy the first group of 12 Thai children were selected for such scholarship. And later on , children from Jordan, India, Nigeria, Vietnam, Nepal and Zambia joined the Village

Up to 1995, a total of 77 Thai children had benefited from the scholarship offerred by the British Pestalozzi Children's Village. More than 50 of them have already completed their education and returned to Thailand. The student returnees have assisted in raising the standard of living of their families and have made contributions to the Thai society, in accordance with the aim of the Pestalozzi Children' Village.

Operation

The Foundation for Further Education began to offer scholarships to 20 children, who were attending primary schools, in 1991 . Since then, more than 100 children were selected to receive scholarships, in accordance with the set criteria, from all regions of Thailand. Currently there are 51 children under the Foundation's aid in the form of scholarship.

Target

Through realizing the importance of education for the country's human resource, The Foundation for Further Education has set up the target of creating more opportunities for young Thai people to utilize their inteiligence and capability to a greater extent, so that they will be able to help develop the country later on. The Foundation intends to keep increasing the number of children under scholarship scheme, and adhering to the policy of continuous support up to the first degree or diploma levels of education, depending upon their intelligence, capability, academic reports and conduct reports.
